Founded in 2013 by architect and textile artist Hannah Newton, NEWTON is a small-batch leather workshop dedicated to designing and crafting objects with distinctive simplicity and a deep respect for material, technique, and form. Launched with a strict commitment to traditional handcraft, the studio’s early work — including the Classic and Fall/Winter 2018 collections — earned a shortlist nomination for Western Living’s Designer of the Year Award.
Dreamt up in rural Nova Scotia, NEWTON’s early practice later took shape in East Vancouver, where the industrial landscape left a lasting mark on its design language. This interplay between rural quiet and urban grit continues to define the brand’s identity — a balance of stillness and structure, nature and industry — a kind of heavy-duty couture.
Guided by principles of architecture and design, NEWTON’s process considers proportion, balance, and structure. Lines, edges, and volumes are approached with clarity and restraint, ensuring that each piece carries both functional integrity and a quiet, intentional presence. A reflection of our belief in individuality and the beauty of imperfection, NEWTON’s aesthetic embraces restraint while celebrating the character of natural leather — its subtle variations, marks, and textures. Each piece is shaped slowly, by hand, balancing function and proportion with the honesty of the material itself.
Crafted with patience and care, NEWTON invites you to live with objects that endure — evolving with time, touch, and the lives they accompany.
Today, NEWTON is based in rural Nova Scotia, operating from a purpose-built studio that reflects the same principles as the work created within it.
